Organic Acid Meets Caustic Cleaning

Wine and beer production floors live at both ends of the pH scale: tartaric and other organic acids from the product, then the caustic clean-in-place chemistry that follows every run. Standard epoxy clears dull, soften and fail under that cycling. Production topcoats here are novolac or urethane, chemistries specified for exactly this alternation, and that single line item is most of the difference between a floor that lasts and one that needs redoing in three years.

Thermal Shock Is the Brewery Killer

Wort leaves the kettle near boiling, and wash-down water in a brew house is not far behind. Poured across a slab that was at cellar temperature a moment earlier, that heat expands the coating faster than the concrete under it and shears the bond line, which is why thin epoxy in breweries fails at the bond within a couple of seasons. Urethane cement carries a thermal expansion coefficient close to concrete itself and simply moves with the slab.

Falls, Drains and Coving Decide Inspections

A production floor is a wash-down floor, and wash-down is only as good as where the water goes. We re-cut falls where slabs have settled flat, detail the resin into trench and hub drains rather than stopping at the edge, and turn an integral cove up the wall so there is no floor-to-wall joint to harbour anything. Health and food-safety inspections are decided in this detailing far more often than in the field of the floor.

Schedule Around the Vintage

A winery floor takes three to five days including cure, and there is exactly one part of the year that can absorb that: after bottling, before harvest. We book winery production floors January through June and keep crews clear of the corridor during crush. Breweries have more flexibility, tanks permitting, a brewery floor can be phased zone by zone in any season without stopping production.

The Tasting Room Is a Different Floor

Front of house has none of the production constraints and all of the aesthetic ones. Polished concrete is the default answer, architectural, cool underfoot in a hot valley summer, immune to UV through south glazing, and cheap to maintain across thousands of visitor days. Metallic epoxy belongs where the room itself is part of the brand. Either way the spec includes a slip-rated guard, because wine ends up on tasting room floors daily.

What flooring does a winery need?

Two different floors. Production areas, crush pad, cellar, bottling, need a seamless quartz broadcast or urethane cement system at $11-$16 per square foot, coved, fallen to drain, and topcoated for organic acid and caustic exposure. Tasting rooms and retail do better in polished concrete at $6-$14, with metallic epoxy where the room is the showpiece.

Can you coat a crush pad?

Yes, and most crush pads need it by the time we see them: bare concrete around the drains etched and stained purple by years of juice. The slab is ground or shot-blasted, the acid-damaged areas rebuilt, falls corrected, and a quartz system with a novolac topcoat installed with real slip texture. Three to five days, booked between bottling and harvest.

Why do brewery floors fail so quickly?

Thermal shock plus chemistry. Near-boiling wort and hot caustic wash-down over a cold slab shear thin epoxy at the bond line, and the acid-then-caustic cleaning cycle attacks whatever survives. The floors that last in breweries are urethane cement or heavy quartz builds with urethane or novolac topcoats, installed with coving and proper falls.

Does red wine stain concrete?

Bare concrete, permanently. Wine is acid plus pigment: the acid opens the surface and the pigment follows it in, which is why crush pads and cellar floors carry purple halos around every drain. A sealed or coated floor keeps both at the surface, where they mop off. On polished tasting room floors the penetrating guard does the same job invisibly.
